Saturday, December 8, 2007 - Just after 13:00 hours the 1st alarm assignment was struck for 300 Willow Valley Lakes Dr at the Lakes Manor for a reported building fire. County Communications advised of a 9-1-1 call received reporting a fire in apartment E325. First arriving Engine 5-12-1 encountered moderate smoke in the D, E, and F corridors and maintenance reported that all occupants of the E and F wings had been evacuated. Upon reaching the fire apartment Engine 5-12-1's crew led by Chief Reese encountered heavy smoke when they cracked the door. The high rise pack was deployed along with 300' of 3" line and Engine 1's crew along with the truck crew entered the apartment to extinguish the fire and search the apartment. Crews found a top of stove fire that had spread to the cabinets and overhead exhaust unit. Thanks to the quick work of a maintenance person the fire was kept in check by a dry chemical extinguisher and prevented the potential of a catastrophic loss. All searches were negative and the 2nd alarm was brought in due to the large amount of smoke throughout the building. Multiple fans were utilized in different areas to remove the smoke and to bring the co levels back down to 0. Once all smoke and co levels were removed the incident was placed under control at 14:15. Thanks to all the assisting companies including Lampeter, Quarryville, Lancaster City, Lafayette, Lancaster Township, Conestoga, West Willow, Millersville, and Refton. SVEMS and LEMSA handled the EMS sector. Thanks also to standby companies Gordonville and Gap. Deputy 5-12 M Reese had the command. 5-12 units cleared the scene at 15:09 hours. Later in the evening the Rescue assisted 5-8 on a reported building at Rosies Drive In on Lancaster Pike. A birds nest caught fire on a lighting fixture and units were on scene a short time. The company was also dispatched to a vehicle accident assist to Lampeter in which the 5-12 units were recalled due to negative injuries.
